Oyo Plans Repatriation Of Beggars, Destitute

The Oyo State government has planned to repatriate beggars, destitute, of other states of origin, back to their respective states.

Commissioner-designate for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs Faosat Sanni, gave this hint during her appearance before the state House of Assembly, on Thursday.

Sanni said the repatriation became expedient following the discovery that several of the beggars, destitute have syndicates that they make returns to.

She noted that a repatriation had been identified as the lasting solution because the beggars, destitute keep returning to the streets after being picked and taken to the state resettlement facility at Akinyele, in Ibadan.

Though she noted that the state was working to fix the porosity of its Akinyele centre, Sanni said total repatriation would help the state tackle the menace posed by an increasing number of beggars, destitute across the state.

Sanni alongside Akinola Ojo (Ministry of Finance), Prof Oyelowo Oyewo SAN (Ministry of Justice), Chief Bayo Lawal (Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Professor Dahud Sangodoyin (Ministry of Public Works), Mr Temilolu Ashamu (Ministry of Energy), Mr Ayansiju Lawal (Ministry of Establishment and Training) were subsequently confirmed as Commissioners.

In his own response to questions asked by the lawmakers, Mr Temilola Ashamu gave reasons why the state was presently using generating sets to power the street lights being erected under the administration’s “Light up Oyo” project.

He explained that the use of generating sets was only the third in the tripartite leg of options being used to power the project.

Ashamu explained that the state was presently using generating sets because it was yet to get power from the national grid and that it was still laying infrastructure for the use of solar, which is second in the leg of options, to power the street lights.

The Commissioner-designates subsequently took turns to give assurances of better serving the various ministries they are returning to, for the next two years.

In his remarks, Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin urged the Commissioners to do more in justifying the confidence reposed in them especially the Governor which led to their re-appointment.
